Substance Use in Pregnancy and Mandatory Reporting in Arizona: What Clinicians Need to Know

Learning Objectives:
- Describe Arizona’s current mandatory-reporting requirements for prenatal substance exposure and substance-exposed newborns
- Differentiate prescribed medical treatment from nonmedical substance exposure, including the implications for pregnant and postpartum patients receiving methadone, buprenorphine, or other medications for opioid use disorder.
- Apply a trauma-informed, family-centered approach when discussing toxicology testing, mandatory reporting, Plans of Safe Care, and DCS involvement with pregnant and postpartum families.
The educational objective for the APAL Grand Rounds Series is to improve medical providers’ knowledge and skills in diagnosing, treating, and supporting pregnant and postpartum individuals experiencing mental health challenges. The APAL Grand Rounds Series is held monthly on a Friday from 12 to 1pm.
