Dr. Kathy W. Smith is a highly accomplished psychiatrist and educator, serving as Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. With over 20 years of experience, she is a recognized leader in the assessment and treatment of perinatal mood disorders, as well as the evaluation and stabilization of psychiatric emergencies.
 
Dr. Smith provides compassionate clinical care while mentoring the next generation of physicians through her work with medical students and residents at Banner University Medical Center and Connections Health Solutions - Crisis Response Center.
 
A dedicated medical educator, Dr. Smith is a member of the Association of Medical Education Scholars (AMES) and is deeply involved in teaching, educational research, and faculty development for both undergraduate and graduate medical education. Nationally, she contributes as a member of the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP) and serves on the Editorial Board for the ACP’s Psychiatry Residency In-Service Training Examination (PRITE). Her exceptional contributions to teaching have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious American Psychiatric Association’s Roeske Teaching Award.
 
Dr. Smith is passionate about improving mental health care access in Arizona. She brings her expertise to the perinatal and pediatric psychiatry access lines, providing invaluable support to medical providers delivering real-time mental health care to the state’s most vulnerable populations.
 
A proud Arizonan, Dr. Smith earned her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Arizona State University before completing her medical degree, psychiatry residency, and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Since joining the faculty in 2006, she has made a lasting impact on psychiatry, education, and the well-being of her community.
